Romance and The Scarlet Letter

We took a lot of notes on theme topics and romantic elements in class on Friday-- PLEASE get the notes from someone-- here is the outline only:

CORNELL NOTES:
Topic: Romanticism in The Scarlet Letter by Nathaniel Hawthorne
Essential Question: How does Hawthorne use romantic literary elements to develop themes in The Scarlet Letter?

Note headings:
1. Theme Topics--each class did a huge brainstorm here of theme topics (subjects related to the human condition) we have seen pop up so far in the text. PLEASE GET THE NOTES!
Choose one of the topics and write for three minutes about where you see this topic showing up in the text through character, setting, plot, or the author's commentary/

2. Romantic Elements-- (We mentioned just the one below one and reminded ourselves to watch out for them as we read this weekend)
Sympathetic Nature (the natural world seems interested in interacting with human life): Example: The rose bush outside the prison door in the first chapter. Read the last paragraph of chapter one for evidence-- but the author suggests that this beautiful bush might have grown in honor of a brave and innocent woman who was once imprisoned here, and also suggests that The fragrant blooms might ease Hester's pain a little as well as ours, as readers because the story dwells on "human frailty and sorrow."

READING ASSIGNMENT: Read Chapter 8 and 9 by Monday: The Elf Child and the Minister and The Leech.

Great days of Grammar on Wednesday and Thursday

We worked quite a bit with expanding sentences to make them more interesting, if not greater-- we will continue to focus on how grammar works-- only to discover how we can make it work for us!
Grammar exercises below

10/23/2014 Please Fix This
Write a letter to the principal requesting that one of the rules in the Student Handbook be changed in some way.  Be reasonable and convincing!

Grammar Search: 10/23/2014
Go through the journal writes you have in your folder and “find” a three or four word sentence that you can extract. You may have to take an excerpt from one of your longer, more elegant sentences, and you will, for sure, have to take it out of context.  Please be sure that you have a complete sentence, then copy it onto a half-sheet of paper with your name on it.

Pass your half-sheet around your table. Each person should add 1-3 words and re-write your sentence.  Make sure that you have a complete and correct sentence at the end of EVERY addition. Thanks!
 EXAMPLE:
Take an excerpt.
Take an excerpt from your dreams.
Open up and take an excerpt from your dreams.
Love life again, my friend, open up and take an excerpt from your dreams.

Write two poems based on the "I AM" pattern.
One poem should be about yourself, whether you decide to make it serious, funny, dark, or sill- whatever.  the second poem must be you writing as a character from Macbeth.  You can be anyone from Lady Macbeth to the "Second Witch" or lady Macduff-- have fun with this and show your knowledge of the characters in Macbeth!

There to meet with Macbeth!

First, a reminder that you should have your rough draft of the semester project finished by now-- in class I asked students to write a paragraph that explains what they have completed, what is left to do, and EXACTLY when it will be finished.  If you were absent, please write about your progress on the project and bring it to me on Monday.

Macbeth Stuff:

We got throughout he third scene in Act I today-- learned something about the power/non-power of witches and heard them give some old news and some pretty prodigious prophecies to both Macbeth and Banquo, our war heroes. Class members split up into groups of five in order to
1- choose a setting/time period for the staging/performance of this scene
2- split up the parts
3- begin to practice and memorize the lines
4- prepare for an amazing performance at the end of next week
Performance: Act I, scene 3 of Macbeth. Many students were interested in creating a video of their performance like the example that we watched on youtube, but that is not required.  We will perform on Friday of next week-- May 9th, and classroom performance is the goal.  If your group does create a video, you can show it then.
Grading: I will grade the performances for correct usage of Shakespeare's language, understanding and communication of the meaning of the words, and yes, CREATIVITY! Have fun with this-- witches dancing onstage and grown men changing from loyal warriors to stunned silence and possible plotters of royal murders is fun stuff! I will give time in class for your groups to meet and rehearse.
See you on Monday!

Ready to Recite?

Thursday and Friday we worked on paraphrasing and analyzing the theme of our poems so that we go into he memorization process with an idea of the message that our poem is trying to send.
We worked on "The Brain is Wider Than the Sky" by Emily Dickinson in class. Friday we spent a lot of time using the same process on our own poems: paraphrase/write analysis sentences-- (TURN THESE IN). Then: MEMORIZE!
We will start recitations on Wednesday-- we can get through everyone in one class period, I think.  Can't wait!
NOTE: We will check out our new text, One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest,  by Ken Kesey, on Monday.
